I would encourage you to open up your mind to other possibilities and start looking at options. You're going to have to try something else, even if it's the software that came with your camera. Have you even tried to use Bridge? Have you give it a chance? Have you considered looking at an available tool to see if you can work with? Have you considered Lightroom? Or Photo Mechanic? or On1 RAW? Or Capture One? Most of these (if not all) have free trials available. Nothing will integrate with Windows Photo preview. I didn't mean Firefox, or Chrome, or etc. Now then: I used the term 'browser' in a generic sense. One that doesn't expect to use File Explorer to look at images. Where does that leave you? In need of a new paradigm. My guess is you'll never see it it's probably not a priority for them. And Microsoft isn't responsible for producing one Canon is.
And it wouldn't support a brand new camera anyways. If you do some reading on the web, you'll find that, yes, there was a codec pack for Win 7/8. Nikon does the exact same thing with NEF files. When they introduce a new model, they almost invariably update the internals of that file with new stuff (even if it's just model-specific info like the name of the camera), which means a new codec is required to read it. So you can depend upon nothing being implied, other than it's a file from a Canon camera.
The contents of this file can change, and does. What I'm starting to think is since the Canon t7i is new, it has a new type of CR2 (raw) format? And that's why windows doesn't have this new "codec" pack yet available? But obviously my end goal is to use a reliable 3rd party software that intergrates with windows photo preview that isn't browser based but if that's is the only option, i have no choice. But from what I've read so far (not sure hence was wondering if yall could help) before windows 10, windows did have a codec pack for Canon raw files to preview.
